Porenzo Pasinelli (1650-1700) is considered to be the most important Bolognese painter after Guercino. This painting's attribution to Pasinelli has been confirmed by Sir Denis Mahon, who has observed Guercino's influence, both in the work's earthy hues and in the overall composition (Exhib. cat. 'Discovering the Italian Baroque', the Denis Mahon Collection, London, 1997, nƒ 48.). Other sibyls painted by Pasinelli present similarities with this work, in its rhythm, the use of drapery, and its simplicity.

We are very grateful for the help of Dr Stephen D. Pepper who, following Sir Denis Mahon's analysis, agreed with the attribution of this work to Pasinelli and contributed to the study of the painting.
