Egbert van HEEMSKERK le jeune
Haarlem, 1634/1635 - London, 1704
A tavern interior with peasants eating, drinking, smoking and dancing
Oil on canvas
75,3 x 94,5 cm
Egbert van Heemskerk the younger was a pupil of Pieter Grebbers and probably of his father Egbert van Heemskerk the elder (Harlem, 1610 - Harlem, 1680) whose manner he adopted. He was a genre painter and an engraver. He went to London where he was very well received; the Count of Rochester offered him patronage.
The painting is a very good example of the portrayal of festivities in taverns, depicting peasants in the seventeenth-century in Holland with moral overtones. In the smoggy interior, lit only by two dark windows, the artist demonstrates his aptitude for chiaroscuro, depicting peasants in various poses that are both natural and humorous.

We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer, Curator of Old Master Paintings at the RKD in The Hague, for confirming the attribution of our painting to Egbert van Heemskerk the younger.
